The German theologian Jurgen Moltmann expresses in a single sentence the great span from Good Friday to Easter. It is, in fact, a summary of human history, past, present, and future: “God weeps with us so that we may someday laugh with him.” – Phillip Yancey

Malachi 3:3 “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.”

This verse puzzled several ladies that met for a weekly Bible study.  They discussed the meaning of the verse and wondered what this said about the nature and character of God.  One of the ladies offered to research the refining process of silver and have some additional thoughts at their next Bible study.

Later that week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work.  She didn’t mention the reason for her interest –beyond simple curiosity about the refining process.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat.  He explained while refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where flames were the hottest so as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says, “He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver.”   She asked the silversmith if it was true, that he had to sit there in front of the fire the entire time.

The man answered that yes, not only must he sit there holding the silver, but he also had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire.  If the silver was left in the fire a moment too long, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment, then she asked the silversmith, “How do you know when the silver is fully refined?”  He smiled at her and answered, ‘Oh, that’s easy — when I can see my image in it.  Look closely at the image above.  Did you notice the reflection?

In yesterday’s morning worship service, children between the ages of 2 and 6 were invited to come to the front of the auditorium to sing “Blue Skies and Rainbows.”  The minister suggested the rest of us might even learn something from these children.”    I was open minded, but skeptical about what I might learn from 25 or 30 toddlers but I watched and learned. 

Everyone smiled as the children raced to the stage, which spanned the width of the auditorium.  The stage had 5 large steps, spanning the length of the stage.  The children arrived at the stage and begin to climb the steps.  The older children had little difficulty with the steps but the smaller children struggled.  I watched in amazement as the older children stepped back down from the stage to help the younger ones up the steps.  Five-year olds held the hands of 4 year olds and pulled them up.  Six-year olds picked up two and three year olds and with their arms around them, and struggled to carry them up the steps.  Their smaller friends needed help and there was absolutely no hesitation in helping them.

When all the children were at the top of the stage, they sang joyfully.  When the song was over, they started back down the steps.  Again, the older children held the hands of the younger children.  Some carried the small ones down the steps.  They raced out of the auditorium and off to Children’s Bible Hour.

I’m not sure what everyone else learned over that two or three minutes, but I thought of the passage in Luke 18 (Verse 17):  “Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it at all.”

Pure in heart, these children were anxious to sing and they were not about to leave anyone behind.  They truly loved one another.

An American company has just announced the launch of a website that will automate prayers for you — for a monthly fee, of course!  The typical charge is $4.95 per month to say three prayers specified by you each day.

“We use state of the art text to speech synthesizers to voice each prayer at a volume and speed equivalent to typical person praying,” the company states. “Each prayer is voiced individually, with the name of the subscriber displayed on screen.”

Prices, however, are dictated by the length of the prayer. As noted in the FAQ’s of the company’s website, “A discounted prayer will cost less than other prayers of similar length.

One evening in the fall of 1869, an elderly Cherokee indian took his grandson by the hand.  They walked away from the village and built a fire under the stars.  At first, they sat quietly and absorbed the sounds of the night.  In the distance, a chorus echoed thru the canyon — the voice of wolves on the hunt.

The elderly man turned to his grandson and begin to speak.  “My son, the wolves are hungry tonight and they are closer than you think.  The boy placed another stick on the fire and moved closer to his grandfather.

He continued, “Do not be afraid of the sounds of the night.”  Be afraid of the battle between the two wolves that live inside each of us.”  But the boy did not understand. 

“Of the two wolves, one is evil.  It is full of anger, jealously, envy, sorrow, greed, regret, arrogance, self-pity, self-doubt, resentment, inferiority, lies, pride, and ego.   The other wolf is good.  It is full of joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, kindness, humility, benevolence, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”

Stirring the fire with a long stick, the boy asks his grandfather, “which wolf will win?”  After a long, thoughtful pause, the grandfather answered, “the one you feed.”

When I was a puppy, we played chase and I made you laugh.   You held me close and loved me despite the messes I made and the shoes I chewed.   We were the best of friends.

Somedays you would scold me.  I would roll over and you would rub my tummy and tell me it was okay.  My housetraining took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together and I tried really hard.

I remember laying in bed together.  You told me about your days, about your troubles, about your dreams and your fears.  We snuggled for hours and I would wait for you to fall asleep because I didn’t want to miss a word you had to say.  We went for long walks and played in the park.  I liked to ride in the car but it scared me.  But as long as I sat next to you, I knew I would be okay. 

I remember the time you shared your ice cream with me.  Do you remember when I shared my cookie with you?  I missed you so much.  Everyday I would wait patiently, for the sound of your car and the thump of your door closing.

Summer turned to winter and back to summer again.  Tug-a-war, fetch…  I lost track of time because we had so much fun.   The ends of my hair started to turn white and I couldn’t play chase like I used to.  My back hurt a lot but you were always there to rub me and love me. 

I feel bad most of the time and I can’t walk very well anymore.  I can’t even see your face but I sure can taste you when I give you kisses.   I can’t wait to get the shot you’ve been telling me about.    I really want to go to the place where I can chase butterflies and run with the wind.   You will be there too, won’t you?  Please tell me you will be there too!

The world is full of pain, suffering, confusion, and broken hearts.  I wonder how many prayers God receives each day.  Does He count the tears?  Does He REALLY care?  Why won’t He answer me?!   Why won’t He just say “YES!”  I struggle with these questions myself — Oh how I struggle.

One night while sitting outside and watching the stars, I tried to put myself in God’s position and thought about the most common questions God must receive.  It’s not that difficult to imagine. 

Certainly, there are prayers to mend relationships, prayers to heal the sick, prayers to save the dying.  There are prayers for better jobs, prayers to resolve financial difficulties, prayers for material things.

So what would happen if God always said, “Yes?”   A lot of thoughts come to mind:  Overpopulation and starvation are just two.  But surely our God can fix that in His supernatural way!  Yes, he can. 

I suspect the root of the reason God doesn’t always say “yes” is because we need Him more than we realize.   When we lose a friend or a family member, our grief often leads us to God.   When we experience sickness, we turn to God. 

Garth Brooks said it best in his song, “Unanswered Prayers.”  The Chorus:

Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers
Remember when youre talkin to the man upstairs
That just because he doesnt answer doesnt mean he dont care
Some of gods greatest gifts are unanswered prayers

In the late 1980′s, a friend gave me a flight simulator game for my computer.  I immediately installed it and wasted many hours “flying” the simulator.  A few months passed and I decided it was time to get my pilot’s license!

My first few lessons went well and my instructor gave me clearance for my first solo flight.  After a few more lessons, it was time for my first cross-country, solo flight.  I was nervous but excited!  

It was a hot, July afternoon in north central Oklahoma.  I planned my flight to the last detail and filed my flight plan.   After walking around the aircraft and checking the fuel tanks, I climbed into the cockpit and within a few minutes I was rolling down the runway grinning from ear to ear. 

My aircraft reached for the sky as I climbed to 500 feet and banked to the northwest.  I was now on my way to Enid, Oklahoma — the first of three legs on my first solo, cross-country flight.  About 25 minutes later, I began my descent into Enid.  I rolled out on the runway, taxied back, and quickly continued the journey to Winfield, Kansas (the 2nd leg of my flight). 

I climbed out of Enid (Woodring Airport) and sharply turned the aircraft to the northeast.   It was at that time I realized the VOR (navigational system) in Winfield, Kansas was out of service.   As any good student pilot would, I had planned for this possibility and prepared a map so I could fly by “pilotage” (visual check points on the ground). 

Confident in my 15 hours of flight time, I continued on the proper heading (or so I thought).   The skies were hazy and visibility was poor.   It was time for my first visual check point (an intersection of two highways) but it was nowhere to be found.  A little disappointed, I continued on my way and began searching for my second visual check point (a railroad crossing).  Unfortunately, there was no railroad to be found.  

Feeling a little concern, but not ready to admit defeat — I continued on my heading and began searching for my third visual check point (Interstate-35).  Minutes passed but there was no interstate in sight.  I started to sweat. 

There aren’t very many visual indicators when you fly over the wheatfields of northwestern Oklahoma — and you can’t just pull over and ask for directions.  So I decided to circle in the general vicinity while I pulled out my map and tried to figure out where I was. 

I circled for about 10 minutes but I couldn’t make sense of my situation.  So reluctantly, I went to “Plan C.”  Plan C was the radio frequency for Vance Air Force Base, which I had scribbled on a piece of paper and stuck in my shirt pocket before leaving the pilot’s lounge in Stillwater.  

Embarrassed but out of options, I contacted Vance Air Force Base and identified myself as a civilian, student pilot lost somewhere over the heartland of America.   When the laughter died down on the other side of the microphone, they eventually identified my aircraft on their radar and gave me step by step directions to the Enid airport.  Thirty minutes later, I was safely on the ground in Enid — embarrassed but thankful to be at an airport.

In evaluating my flight, it quickly became apparent my poor flight plan was a major factor in the failure of my first cross country solo flight.  Yes, it was compounded by a non-functioning, navigational system and poor visibility – but that’s no excuse. 

I was fortunate to have someone to contact while I was lost.  Someone I could explain my situation to – someone to ask for help.  Someone that would guide me safely to my destination.

Prayer is very similar.  When you’re lost…  When you don’t know what to do…  When you don’t know which direction to turn…  Remember to contact  God and ask Him for direction.  He is always listening.

A few years ago, I received a one dollar bill with something written on it.  I didn’t pay a lot of attention as I slipped it into my wallet.  The next day, I pulled it back out of my wallet while I was standing in line to purchase a cup of coffee.  With a few moments of time on my hands, I glanced at the dollar bill.  In red lettering, someone wrote, “wheresgeorge.com”   

A lot of things passed thru my mind.  First, what a great marketing idea!  Free advertising on dollar bills.  No telling how many people will see that web address over the next few years.  Next I thought, “why doesn’t the government sell advertising on dollar bills?”   Finally, ”I have got to see this website!”   

Later that evening, I turned on my computer and typed in www.wheresgeorge.com.   It was a website that allowed one to enter the serial number of your dollar bill, then write “wheresgeorge.com” on your dollar bill before placing it into circulation.  It was obvious that one could go back from time to time to see exactly where your dollar bill has traveled since it left your hands.

I started browsing thru the website and found one dollar bill had departed a Sonic in Dayton, Ohio, traveled to Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, back to Texas, Utah, and ended up in Michigan — in 214 days.

Now, this is not an advertisement for “wheresgeorge.com.”  In fact, it might even be illegal to write on a dollar bill — so don’t do that.  But it’s amazing to consider how a benign piece of paper can be passed from person to person and continue over a journey of many miles and great amounts of time.  It’s  ashame we can’t track our good deeds and kindness among one another in the same way! 

As you have probably learned in the news, a military jet recently crashed into a San Diego home, killing a family of four. Dong Yun Yoon, the lone survivor of this family lost his wife, two baby daughters and mother-in-law while the pilot safely ejected from the doomed aircraft.  

Yesterday, Dong Yun Yoon offered this public statement about the pilot of the aircraft:  “I pray for him not to suffer for this action”  “I know he’s one of our treasures for our country.”  In his unimaginable suffering and grief, Dong Yun Yoon took time to offer forgiveness to someone that accidentally took the lives of his family. 

Wouldn’t it be amazing to track the forgiveness and mercy of Dong Yun Yoon as it propagates across time and space?  Never forget:  How you live… what you do… what you say… will echo throughout the ages.  Will you spread love and forgiveness or will you spread hostility, anger and grudges?

Six degrees of separation is an interesting, yet unproven theory that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is an average of six “steps” away from each person on Earth. 

It’s a thought provoking concept — one that lead me to consider exactly what separates us from God.  Fortunately, there is only one degree of separation that stands between you and God — and that is sin.   One degree of separation and five steps to integration.  To find God, you must:

1.  Hear:     (John 6:45)  It is written in the prophets:  They will all be taught by God, everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.  

3.  Repent:     (Acts 3:19)  Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord…

4.  Confess:     (Matthew 10:32)  Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in Heaven.  

5.  Be Baptised:     (Acts 2:38)  Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.  And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

My dad passed away in 1999 at the age of 81.  A few years later, I had the opportunity to meet his closest childhood friend for the first time.  He looked at me and laughed.  “You look just like your father” he said.    I lost myself in his memories as he spoke.  This man knew a side of my dad that I would never know.   As he spoke, I wondered about the times they shared as teenagers – the laughter, the fears, the secrets, the tears.

He spoke of good times and hard times and then he asked to see my hands.   As I extended my arms, he took my hands and turned them over.  He looked them over, told me I had a firm handshake and then released his grip.  I wondered what he was looking for or what he was thinking about when he looked at my hands. 

Later in the day, I took a moment and looked at my hands.  They were clean, steady, and without callous.   Mine were the hands of an average, white collar ”baby boomer.”   It was at that moment that I realized the significance of the hands.   Hands are indicative of the life you are living and they tell no lies.  Hands build and hands tear down.  Hands wound and hands heal.  Hands lift up and hands shove down.   Did you know ”hands” are referred to 440 times in the Bible?

1 Thessalonians 4:11  And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

Hands Threatened:

Matthew 18:28  But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.

Hands Healed:

Mark 8:25  After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.

Hands Blessed:

And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Hands Betrayed: 

Matthew 17:22  And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men:

John 19:3  And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

Luke 23:46  And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

Crucifixion is a horrible way to die.  Prior to being crucified, Jesus was scourged.  The Romans used a whip called a flagrum.  It consisted of numerous leather straps that held bone and pieces of metal.  During scourging, skin is ripped from the back to expose a bloody mass of tissue and bone. 

After the scourging, Jesus was made to carry His own crossbar to the execution site (Golgotha/Place Of The Skull — pictured above).  The crossbar could have easily exceeded 100 pounds.  Scholars believe the distance Jesus was forced to carry His crossbar to be approximately 200 yards.  Upon arrival at the execution site, the crossbar was laid down and Jesus was made to lie down on the crossbar.  With arms extended, spikes measuring approximately 7″ x 1/2″ were driven thru His wrists and into the crossbar.  The spikes probably hit the area of the median nerve, which would have caused waves of pain up the arms and into the shoulders and neck.

Standing at the crucifixion site was a 7-foot-tall post.  In the center of the post was a crude seat to “support” Jesus.  The crossbar was then lifted on to the post, and Jesus’s body was awkwardly turned on the seat so that the feet could be nailed to the stipes.  At this point, there was tremendous strain put on the wrists, arms and shoulders, which probably caused dislocation of the shoulder and elbow joints.

The position of the nailed body probably held His rib cage in a fixed position, which made it extremely difficult to exhale, and impossible to take a full breath.  Having suffered from the scourging, the beatings, and the walk with the crossbar, Jesus was undoubtedly extremely weak and probably dehydrated.  He was probably losing significant amounts of blood.  As time passed, the loss of blood and lack of oxygen would have caused severe cramps, spasmodic contractions and perhaps even periods of unconsciousness.

The ultimate mechanism of death in crucifixion was suffocation.  To breathe, Jesus would have been forced to push up on His feet to allow for inflation of the lungs.  As the body weakened and pain in the feet and legs became unbearable, He was probably forced to trade breathing for pain and exhaustion.   Due to shallow breathing, it is possible His lungs collapsed, which would have lead to hypoxia.

Due to the loss of blood from the scourging, Jesus may have formed respiratory acidosis, resulting in an increased strain on the heart, which causes the heart to beat faster.  Fluid may have accumulated in His lungs.  Under the stress of hypoxia and acidosis, His heart would eventually fail. 

Regardless of the cause of physical death, the historical record is very clear — Jesus suffered hours of horrible and sustained torture on the cross.  But even with tremendous pain, Jesus thought of others rather than Himself. His first words from the cross were, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). He thought of His mother, who stood by the cross weeping, and asked John to take care of her. On either side of Jesus were two thieves executed at the same time.  When one of them accepted Jesus as Lord, Jesus shared with him, “Today shalt thou be with Me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). Finally, Jesus expressed his complete surrender to the will of God as He said, “It is finished;” (John 19:30). “Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit” (Luke 23:46).

As the son of God, Jesus could have called upon the angels to save him – but he chose not to.  He could have quenched his own thirst – but he chose not to.  He could have elected to feel no pain — he chose to suffer.  He could have struck his tormentors with unimaginable suffering.  He chose to forgive.

I have often wondered what Jesus thought about while suffering on the cross.  Did He envision the faces of all of those that He was dying for?  Did He see the face of your grandmother?  Did He see the face of your mother?  Did He see the face of your child?  Did He see your face?   There is no biblical account of what Jesus was thinking while on the cross, but I would like to think He thought of you and me.

According to the London Times, extremist Hindu groups are offering $250.00, alcohol, food and fuel, to kill Christians and destroy their homes in the eastern state of Orissa, India.  To date, 67 Christians have been killed in Orissa and several thousand homes have been razed.  Hundreds of places of worship have been destroyed.   

While violence has subsided over the past few days, at least 11,000 Christian refugees remain in camps in Kandhamal.  “They are too scared to go home. They know that if they return to their villages they will be forced to convert to Hinduism,” Father Manoj, who is based at the Archbishop’s office in Bhubaneshwar, the state capital, said.

William Shakespeare, the third of eight children, acclaimed English poet and playwright, husband and father.  Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway at the age of 18.  She was 26.  Together, they had three children (Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith).  Hamnet died at the age of 11.   A sad, yet ordinary life in the late 1500′s.

Almost 500 years later, we attribute Shakespeare to 154 sonnets, several poems, and 38 well known plays, including Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, Julias Caesar, and Romeo and Juliet.  The writings of William Shakespeare influenced authors of following generations, including Charles Dickens and William Faulkner.   His use of language served to shape modern English — but did you know that over 20,000 musical compositions are attributed to the influence of William Shakespeare?

Do you have an extra Bible that you no longer use?  Not sure what to do with it?  If you ship it to us, we will place it in the hands of someone, somewhere around the globe, that desperately wants a Bible but has no way of getting one. 

It doesn’t matter if it’s well used.  It doesn’t matter if it has been highlighted.  It doesn’t matter what version.  We have shipped Bibles of all shapes, sizes, and conditions to those starving for the Word of God in many nations on every continent.

The U.S. Postal Service has made it simple.  If you have several extra Bibles, you can ask them for a “flat rate shipping box” and fill it with up to 20 pounds for a small flat rate.  If you have only one, ask them for a “flat rate envelope.”  Then you can mail your Bible(s) to:  Bibledonate.org, 601 S. Washington, Suite 200, Stillwater, OK  74074.  If you would like, we can provide you with the name and mailing address of the person(s) that received your Bible(s) so you can write and encourage them.

A man and woman grasped each other’s hands as they walked along a path in the mountains of Montana.   As they walked and talked, they noticed an echo.  They stopped and laughed.  The man cupped his hands around his mouth and turned toward the closest mountain and shouted, ”Hello!”  A moment later, they heard the repeated, fading echo of “hello.”  She shouted, “I love you!”  A moment later, “I love you” echoed across the valley below.  “You’re ugly!” shouted the man.  Then It occurred to the couple that the things they shouted, came back to them three or four times.  ”You’re beautiful!” shouted the woman.
