Do Penguins Ever Slip On The Ice?

13 08 2008

Is it a fish or is it a bird?  Although it swims like a fish, it has feathers like a bird.   In fact, it has about 70 feathers per square inch of it’s body.  The average penguin will live approximately 15 years and spend up to 75% of his life in the water.  He even drinks sea water, but outside of a Zoo or special exhibit, you won’t find a single penguin north of the equator.

It’s amazing what you can learn on the Internet.   I came across this photograph on the National Geographic website.  The first thing to pop into my mind was “How in the world did they ever climb up onto that slippery iceberg?”  So I googled “do penguins slip”   Would you believe that even GOOGLE could not answer that question?  They couldn’t even provide me with a link to a website that would tell me.  Go ahead, give it a try (but finish reading this story first).

Unlike penguins, people slip and fall everyday.   Most of the time, we aren’t paying attention to where we are going – and then it happens.   Some will pick themselves up off of the steps, dust themselves off, glance around to see if anyone happened to notice, and then move forward ;o)  Some are aided by someone that saw the accident and helped them to their feet.  Others are less fortunate.  Sometimes people that are in poor health will stumble, fall, and never recover.

This happens in our spiritual lives too.  Everyone will stumble and fall.  Sometimes a strong person will come along and help us to our feet.  Other times we have to pick ourselves up off of the ground and press forward by ourselves.  But those who are weak will need our help.  Like the penguin, we walk a slippery path on our journey through life.  We must remember to lean on each other if we are to keep our footing.
